Department of State Human Rights Report 1998
The Government generally respects religious freedom; however, proselytizing
is discouraged. Islam is the state religion. Virtually the entire population
is Sunni Muslim. There are also a small number of Catholics. The Government
imposes no sanctions on those who choose to ignore Islamic teachings.
The foreign community supports Roman Catholic, Protestant, Greek Orthodox,
and Ethiopian Orthodox churches. Foreign clergy and missionaries may
perform charitable works.
