U.S. Department of State Human Rights Report 1998

The Constitution provides for religious freedom, and the Government respects this right in practice. There is religious instruction in the schools in the official state religion, the Evangelical Lutheran Church, but any student may without sanction be excused from religion classes with parental permission.
